NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a prominent extension activity functioning under the guidelines of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, with the objective of developing students’ personality through community service. At Government Degree College Arakuvalley, NSS plays a vital role in fostering social responsibility, leadership qualities, and civic consciousness among students.

The NSS activities of the college function under the able guidance and supervision of the NSS Cell, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. NSS was introduced in the college at the time of its establishment with one unit, and subsequently, in recognition of its active performance and student participation, additional units were sanctioned by the University. At present, the college has three (03) NSS units.

Each NSS unit enrolls approximately 100–110 student volunteers every academic year. The volunteers actively participate in a wide range of extension and outreach programmes aimed at community development and national integration. Regular NSS activities include tree plantation drives, observation of nationally important days, blood donation camps, village surveys, cleanliness drives under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, community service programmes, and awareness rallies on social issues such as anti-ganja, drug abuse, and public health.

In addition to regular activities, the NSS units organize Special Camps and Mega Camps as per the guidelines of the Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Andhra University. These camps focus on intensive community engagement, rural development, health awareness, environmental protection, and social welfare. Youth festivals and government-sponsored programmes are also conducted to promote cultural values, national unity, and youth empowerment.

Through its sustained activities, the NSS unit of the college instills a spirit of service, discipline, and leadership among students, enabling them to become socially responsible citizens committed to the nation’s development.
